The disease zygomaticitis is called the inflammatory process of the zygomatic process, which is very often a complication of acute otitis media. As a rule, the main percentage of the incidence of zygomaticitis occurs in early childhood. Timely surgical treatment completely eliminates the clinical manifestations of the disease.
CAUSES OF ZYGOMATICITIS
The main reason provoking the development of this disease are the features of the anatomical structure, namely the close connection of the tympanic cavity with the air-bearing testicles in the zygomatic process, against the background of their early appearance.
As a rule, before the onset of zygomaticitis, a child is diagnosed with acute inflammation of the middle ear. But in the chronic form of otitis media, zygomaticitis in the form of a complication is quite rare. Acute zygomaticitis develops in parallel with acute mastoiditis, since both the mastoid and auditory processes are a single pneumatized system.
The phenomena of inflammation can spread far beyond the boundaries of the mastoid process, to remote areas up to the zygomatic bone, since the cellular system of the temporal cell extends beyond the mastoid process. After the transition of the inflammatory process to the cellular system of the zygomatic process, acute zygomaticitis is diagnosed. This disease is most common in young children.
SYMPTOMS OF ZYGOMATICITIS
Zygomaticitis is characterized by the presence of high body temperature, and significant intoxication against this background. Where the zygomatic process is located, a swelling appears, having a “spilled” shape, which spreads in all directions. Children are characterized by narrowing of the ocular slit, which is a consequence of impaired lymph and blood circulation of the zygomatic region. When examining this area, acute pain syndrome and pasty are noted, which is provoked by the development of periostitis. The auricle on the side of the lesion can bulge down and forward.
Also, the symptoms of this disease are sharp pain when moving the lower jaw, hearing loss, overhanging of the upper wall of the bone of the external auditory canal. Soreness can also be spontaneous or occur at the moment of pressing in the area of the zygomatic process.
Zygomaticitis differs from external otitis media, in which swelling can spread along the zygomatic bone or in front of the tragus. This disease rarely develops as an independent one, as a rule, it is a complication that requires timely treatment.
DIAGNOSIS OF ZYGOMATICITIS
Diagnosis is not difficult and is often possible only based on the clinical picture and complaints of the patient. It should also be taken into account the factor that zygomaticitis very often acts as a complication of otitis media. The presence of such a disease in the patient’s anamnesis further simplifies the diagnosis. When diagnosing zygomaticitis, it is necessary to differentiate from otitis externa and mumps, otogenic lymphadenitis.
TREATMENT OF ZYGOMATICITIS
If the disease manifests itself in a mild form, that is, the general condition of the patient is satisfactory, the temperature is kept in moderate values, and local changes are not pronounced, conservative treatment is prescribed: antibacterial therapy, physiotherapy, etc.
If conservative treatment does not bring tangible results within a few days, as well as if the disease takes a severe form, surgical intervention is prescribed. During surgery, characteristic symptoms of bone destruction and granulation are found in the area of the base of the zygomatic process.
