Parotid abscess
Parotid abscess is a disease of the oral cavity, it is the formation of a delimited inflammatory site, the formation of a cavity filled with pus in it. There is an abscess in the jaw area. If you do not go to the doctor, the inflammation can spread to the surrounding tissues and organs – bones, organs of the nasal cavity and mouth – this is how phlegmon develops. It is possible to eliminate the focus of inflammation only surgically.
reasons
The cause of the development of inflammation is the penetration and reproduction of conditionally pathogenic flora – staphylococci and streptococci. Most often this happens with the advanced course of oral diseases – caries, gingivitis, stomatitis and other diseases. Also, chronic tonsillitis, sore throat, tuberculosis, aseptic disorders in dental treatment can become a cause.
Lymphagenic and hematogenic pathogens can penetrate from other inflammatory areas if they are present. Diseases such as furunculosis, candidiasis and others.
Injuries with a violation of the integrity of the skin and surrounding tissues can lead to the formation of an abscess of the maxillofacial zone.
symptoms
The parotid abscess is accompanied by pain, which resembles dental pain in nature. The pain can reach a very strong intensity, especially if the abscess develops in the immediate vicinity of the nerve endings. The pain can be aching, stabbing, throbbing or tearing in nature. The patient refuses to eat, his appetite decreases. In addition to pain, the patient complains of an increase in temperature, a visual defect – with shallow abscesses, an infiltrate can be seen with the naked eye, the skin above it is hyperemic, edematous, local fever. In some cases, the infiltrate can break out or into the internal tissues of the body, followed by suppuration. When an abscess is opened, the cavity of the abscess, sometimes bone, teeth, is exposed to the outside.
When an abscess is located on the bottom or palate of the oral cavity, problems arise not only with eating, but also with speech, since tongue movements bring severe pain to a person.
diagnostics
To make a diagnosis, it is necessary to be examined by a dentist surgeon or just a surgeon, to collect anamnesis and complaints, anamnesis of life. The patient will have chronic diseases (diabetes mellitus, furunculosis), infectious diseases.
Treatment depends on the stage of development of the abscess. A diet is necessarily prescribed, food is served barely warm in a pureed form, liquid. If it is impossible to take food, the patient is transferred to parenteral nutrition.
An unopened abscess is opened, the cavity is drained, general and local antibacterial therapy is prescribed. If the abscess has just begun to develop, it is not opened, treatment is based only on drug therapy and diet.
In addition to antibiotics, the patient is prescribed vitamin therapy, immunostimulants. Comprehensive treatment, diagnosis and prevention of major diseases are carried out, complete sanitation of the oral cavity is shown. In order to reduce swelling, it is recommended to rinse your mouth.
Analgesic drugs are prescribed only for severe pain syndrome. As a rule, the duration of treatment of an abscess reaches no more than 14 days.
In complex neglected cases, emergency surgical interventions are performed.
