Megalomania
Megalomania is a mental disorder characterized by a hypertrophied and painful attitude of a person to his own person.
CAUSES OF MEGALOMANIA
This disease refers to mental disorders that are characteristic of manic syndrome or is a manifestation of paranoia.
Reasons that can provoke megalomania:
syphilis disease;
brain injury;
moral traumas received in childhood;
neuroses, psychoses;
schizophrenia;
genetic predisposition;
It should be said separately that the usual inflated self-esteem, over time, can independently develop into megalomania. As a rule, this is typical for people with an unhealthy craving for leadership and excellence.
TYPES OF MEGALOMANIA
There are three stages of this disease that depend on the progress of the disorder:
The primary signs of the disease are when a person strives with all his might to highlight his personality as an object worthy of admiration.
Progression of the disease, with the manifestation of all clinical symptoms.
A serious condition of the patient, provoking suicidal tendencies or dementia.
SYMPTOMS OF MEGALOMANIA
The most characteristic symptom for megalomania is a person’s obsession with his own self. Patients are sure that they are the most intelligent, beautiful, powerful, etc., while it is completely impossible to prove the opposite to them. Such people demand admiration for themselves.
Megalomania does not always have pronounced symptoms, so it is not always possible to diagnose this deviation in a timely manner.
Special attention should be paid to a person if his behavior indicates:
Frequent mood swings, from a state of euphoria and excitement to depression and anxiety stupor.
Rejection of criticism in his address, with an inflated self-esteem.
Categorical refusal to accept someone else’s opinion and rejection of advice, even if the patient’s behavior is in clear contradiction with common sense.
Excessive activity.
The presence of insomnia caused by the anxious state of the patient.
In men, megalomania manifests itself much more often than in women, and one of its manifestations may be cases of violence against loved ones.
Women show less aggression, but they completely switch to the desire to become the best in all areas without exception.
The development of severe depression and suicidal tendencies.
DIAGNOSIS OF MEGALOMANIA
Only a psychiatrist can diagnose such a disease, for this he needs:
to get acquainted in detail with the anamnesis of the disease and the patient’s life;
to study the patient’s complaints;
talk to the patient’s relatives and relatives;
There is a category of people for whom the risk of developing this disease is especially high:
drug addicts and alcoholics;
male persons;
people who already have a history of mental disorders;
TREATMENT OF MEGALOMANIA
The main task in the treatment of this pathology is to identify and eliminate the disease that provoked the development of megalomania. So the use of specific therapy is indicated. Megalomania directly refers to incurable diseases and its therapy consists in minimizing the manifestations of mania.
Treatment, depending on the specifics of the clinical picture of the disease, may consist of the following:
long-term observation;
conducting specific therapy;
hospitalization of a patient for treatment in a neuropsychiatric dispensary;
with euphoria and overexcitation, sedatives or tranquilizers are prescribed.
