Hypersalivation
Hypersalivation is a pathological increased salivation that occurs as a symptom of certain diseases, including diseases of the nervous system. As a variant of the norm, hypersalivation occurs in children up to 6 months. Sometimes, the source of the problem with hypersalivation will not be the pathological production of saliva, but the violation of some unconditioned reflexes – for example, the swallowing reflex.
reasons
A normal phenomenon is hypersalivation in children under 6 months
Infectious and acute inflammatory processes of the oral cavity
Irritation of the mucous membrane
Cerebral palsy
Spinal cord and brain damage, epidemic encephalitis
Other diseases of the nervous system – Parkinson’s disease, lateral sclerosis
Diseases of the digestive system – stomatitis, cheilitis, glossitis, stomach ulcer
Special conditions – toxicosis during pregnancy
Poisoning – mercury, lead, iodine salts
classification
Depending on the reasons or other important factors, there are several types of hypersalivation.
Hypersalivation in cerebral palsy
With this type of increased salivation, the main problem is the inability to swallow saliva. The function of saliva production by the gland is not impaired.
Medical hypersalivation
When taking certain medications, an undesirable side effect develops in the form of increased salivation. Examples of such drugs are lithium preparations, nitrazepam. Such hypersalivation is the easiest in terms of relieving the syndrome.
Bulbar and pseudobulbar hypersalivation
This type of pathology is found in the following diseases – polio, syringobulbia, vascular pathology, degenerative diseases.
A distinctive feature of this form of hypersalivation is that saliva can form more than a liter per day, so patients are constantly forced to keep either a handkerchief at their mouth or use certain containers for saliva.
Psychogenic hypersalivation
One of the rarest forms. Doctors cannot find adequate somatic reasons for hypersalivation, however, hypersalivation can also be pronounced.
Hypersalivation in dental pathology
It occurs with stomatitis, glossitis, scarlet fever, helminthic invasion, during pregnancy (during toxicosis with periodic vomiting).
symptoms
The most important symptom of hypersalivation is the accumulation of a large amount of saliva in the oral cavity. The amount of saliva is individual – some have slightly more than usual, while others have so much that they have to use additional means – containers.
treatment
The most important thing in the treatment is to find out the real cause of increased salivation and relief of the condition leading to pathology. If there is an infectious agent, the patient is urgently hospitalized in an infectious hospital, since infections, the symptom of which will be hypersalivation, can be particularly dangerous for others and even incurable. These include, for example, rabies.
For the treatment of hypersalivation, some medications are used, among which are cholinolytics (atropine). In some cases, surgical intervention is resorted to, as well as radiation.
In addition, if hypersalivation has developed in a child, he is assigned special training exercises that will teach the child to swallow saliva, distinguish between wet and dry chin, and control his condition. To do this, they resort to various exercises and procedures. Also, during treatment, it is useful to chew solid food, perform articulation and mimic exercises.
